Many believe that gutters are a fairly recent invention. Gutters are a part of the well-known image of the American dream of a suburban house with blue shutters and a white picket fence. We build our homes for quality and durability. However, contrary to popular belief, the invention of gutters actually date all the way back to 1500 B.C. They were developed by a civilization known as the Harappan. What once was the Harappan is now known as Pakistan. The makeshift gutter systems in this day and age were developed to send waterflow away from their clay homes.
Two strange things that are frequently found in gutters are children’s toys such as balls and frisbees, and earthworms. Gutters were installed on the roofs of vehicles at one point in time to avoid snow from failing on drivers as they exited their vehicles. Due to lack of aerodynamics and increased noise, the gutters were eliminated in the early 1980’s.
